Emergency Funds to Help pay for Groceries, Housing and more.
The Federal Government has announced emergency funding for Canadians under the Covid-19 Emergency Response Act.
The funds will be made available to assist Canadians in paying for essential items such as groceries and housing.
In addition, under the Emergency Response Benefit Act, Canadians who have lost their income due to the pandemic (job loss, illness, quarantine, or taking care of another person who is sick, or who have had to stay home to care for children etc.), will receive income support benefits.
There is an addition benefit that will be provided to low and modest income families by way of a special GST credit “top-up”.
For families receiving child tax benefit, the Covid-19 Emergency Response Act also provides temporary additional amounts to what is currently being received.
Filing a Bankruptcy or a Consumer Proposal does not impact on your eligibility or entitlement to these benefits.
If you are currently in a bankruptcy or consumer proposal, you do not have to make any additional payment as a result of you receiving any of these benefits. And you are not required to turn over the benefits received, the sole possible exception being the enhanced “top-up” portion of the GST credit.
